THANK YOU FOR VISITING THE NATHEY FAMILY WEBSITE! In the more than twenty years that this website has been online, I have been contacted by relatives who are working to piece their family history together. One remarkable occurance happened when I was contacted by a descendant of George Washington Nathey. Before that date, the only George Nathey that I knew was my grandfather's brother. As a young man, George Washington Nathey relocated to Alabama from northwest Florida in the 1880's. His descandant and the author live within fifty miles of each other and in discussing our common heritage, were able to reunite the families of these two sons of William Nathey at the William Nathey Bridge Dedication in November 2007 at Niceville, Florida. We celebrated the history of the William Nathey family who settled at the head of Boggy Bayou in the 1840's, when today's Sunset Cemetery was known as Boggy Cemetery and both communities of Niceville and Valparaiso were Boggy, Florida. Boggy was named Niceville on November 5, 1910.

The following is the result of years of research including time spent listening to family members and many hours of searching public records. This project would have been much more difficult without the help of my Uncle L. J. and my Uncle Jack and my Aunt Lee.

WELCOME! It is encouraging to me when I am contacted by others researching the same family names. If you are interested in contacting me for the purpose of discussing this family line, please contact me at: rbst2u@yahoo.com.

(A1) William Nathey. (Born about 1820 in England, recorded in 1860 Santa Rosa County, FL Federal Census, and died probably before 1880 since he is not found in that census).

To commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Nathey Gristmill (See Gristmill Pictures), built in 1857 by William Nathey, the Florida House and Senate unanimously passed Senate Bill S138 designating the Boggy Bayou Bridge in Niceville, Florida, as the William Nathey Bridge, effective July 1, 2007. On October 10, 2007 The Honorable Jeff Miller of Florida read into the Congressional Record in Washington DC the summary honoring the Life and Legacy of William Nathey and his son, William John Nathey, for their contribution to the establishment of the city of Niceville (See Congressional Record). A dedication ceremony was held on November 12, 2007 at the bridge with about seventy family members attending. Several family membes still live in the Northwest Florida area and some traveled from all over the Southeast to share in this family celebration (See Daily News). The six lane bridge as well as the road construction was completed in 2008. (See Bridge Construction Picture). The Nathey Family is grateful to the State of Florida, the Florida Department of Transportation, the City of Niceville, Florida and the Heritage Museum of Northwest Florida for their combined contributions to honor William Nathey.

Born in England about 1820, he is one of the earliest European settlers in the Niceville area. He may be the William Nethey, son of Charles and Rosanna Nethey, who was baptized on December 6, 1817 according to the church records at Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset, England. He came to the Florida Territory to export timber and shingles to England. Ships from England docked in the Choctowhatchee Bay. Small flat boats, called Lighters, transported the timber and shingles to the ships. The first reference to him is found in the Sept. 7, 1847 tax list in Walton Co. transcribed as Nethy, Wiblin. He is next found listed in the 1860 Santa Rosa County FL Census. At the start of the Civil War, William was 42 years old. In September 1862 the Confederecy extended the draft to age 45. According to Civil War records he enlisted as W. Nethey on April 9, 1863 in Santa Rosa County FL and served as a Private in the 6th Alabama Cavalry, Co. I. The Unit was captured February 23, 1865 in Milton, FL. He is in the 1870 Walton County (Euchee Anne), FL Census, his occupation is a Shinglegetter and the name is spelled Nathy.

Fifteen years before the start of the Civil War, he and his family lived at the head of Boggy Bayou in a log cabin. His wife, Jane M., was born in 1828 in North Carolina and died probably before 1870 since she is not in that census. Their children are William John, born on June 22, 1846, followed by George in 1849, L. M. in 1856, Rosilla in 1860 and Ellison in 1863. During the 1860’s William continued to make and export shingles. Listed with him in the 1860 Santa Rosa Co., FL Census besides his wife and their three oldest children is a Mary D. Nathey and a child, Frederick, age 9. Frederick's birthplace is illegible. The age of Mary D. appears to be 42. She was apparently born in Mississippi or Missouri. The story has been that William went to Florida with his brother and if he did, Mary D. could have been the brother's wife. There is no other information on Mary D. and Frederick. My best guess is that Mary D. is Frederick's mother. In the 1852 Placer Co., CA Census, there is a miner named John Nathey, 40, born in England. Perhaps he left his family behind when he went mining for gold.

The gristmill was essential for the establishment of the pioneer community that became Niceville. William built the Nathey Gristmill on public land, homesteaded forty-four years later by Warren Armstrong, that is today on the Eglin Golf Course. He brought the gristmill stones by oxen from Mobile. At that time, stones were imported to either New Orleans or Mobile from France. Gristmills usually operated on Saturdays where neighbors gathered to socialize. The most important possessions of a gristmill are the stones. The Nathey Gristmill was standing in 1921, but had not been operational for years. As Niceville’s oldest artifact the gristmill stones, which were uncovered in 1957 from Mill Creek on the Eglin Golf Course, were donated by the Commander of Eglin Air Force Base in 1971 (See Letter of Donation.) to the Heritage Museum of Northwest Florida in Valparaiso where they are on display (See Millstones Display Picture.)

(B1) William John "John" Nathey (Nathie, Natthey). FIRST SON OF WILLIAM NATHEY. (Born June 22, 1846 in the newly formed state of Florida and died in 1916).

He is listed in 1880 Walton Co. FL Census and died in 1916 in Okaloosa County, one year after it was formed in 1915.  On June 1, 1903 he received his Homestead for the land on which he was born and on which his father settled. He continued his father’s trade of making shingles. He sold them in Pensacola.

fIn the 1910 census the name is listed as Matthey, and in another transcription, Natthey. He is 63 years old with Mary Jane 58, Ellison 21 and Quinnie 18. William John is in the 1916 voter list for Precinct No. 14 - Niceville, FL., listed with his sons George, Ed and Eli. He is a laborer. On January 16, 1873 he married Mary Jane Bolton in Santa Rosa Co., FL. (b. March 31, 1853 in Alabama and d. Sept. 19, 1922). Her name is spelled Boutler on their marriage license. Her parents are John P. Bolton (b. February 26, 1807 in South Carolina and d. January 27, 1895 in Okaloosa County, FL) and Mary Ann McDonald or McDaniel (b. born August 15, 1818 in South Carolina and d. August 18, 1866). The parents of Mary Jane married December 28, 1838 in Pike County, AL. The other children of John and Mary Bolton are Clarissa b. Aug. 27, 1841 in Pike Co., AL and d. Oct. 05, 1917 in Walton Co., FL. James Thomas b. Oct. 31, 1844 in Pike Co. AL and d. Jan. 13, 1925 in Laurel Hill, FL. John A. b. Nov. 16, 1846 in Pike Co., AL. Rebecca Ann b. May 06, 1847, AL d. Sept. 07, 1938 in Okaloosa Co., FL. Martha b. Oct. 01, 1850 in Pike Co., AL. (Mary Jane is next in birth order) Sarah Elizabeth b.Feb. 07, 1856 d. April 29, 1895 in Santa Rosa Co., FL and Amanda Catharine b. June 20, 1859 and d. August 18, 1866.

(This Bolton information is from a descendant of Rebecca Bolton; Marsha Ankeney, and used with her permission).

In the 1880 Walton Co., FL Census the surname is spelled "Nathie" for William John and his family. The children of William John and Mary Jane Nathey are John, Ida, William, Rebecca, Lewis, George, Richard Edward, Ellison, and Quinnie. Three of their sons married three of the daughters of Irving A. Wise, and Elizabeth J. "Pearl" Crowder. It has been said by the children of these three marriages that they are “double first cousins”. The following are some of the contributions to the establishment of Niceville made by William John and Mary Jane:

1. William Nathey built the Nathey Gristmill in 1857. The original gristmill stones and documentation for the Mill is at the Heritage Museum in Valparaiso located on the west side of Boggy Bayou. Today, Niceville is on the east side of Boggy Bayou, but before Valparaiso was established, the area on both sides of Boggy Bayou was known as Niceville and was a thriving timber industry and fishing community.

2. The present site of an elementary school is located on part of the parcel of land originally settled by William Nathey.  It was the site of  Niceville High School, containing 142.75 acres Section 1 - T1S R23W, Okaloosa County, Florida. (See original Boggy homestead map.) This land is located in what is now the city limits of Niceville. It is on the northern tip of Boggy Bayou where it is crossed by Highway 85. (See Boggy homestead area situated on current area map.) This property was passed on to his children. With Warranty Deed dated May 17, 1924, seven acres of land for the school was donated by George, from sixteen acres that his mother gave him.  The land is now in Okaloosa Co., Florida. On February 18, 1907 William John and his wife for the sum of one dollar made a three year lease of their land for the purposes of boxing all the pine trees for turpentine. The land was described as "South West Quarter (1/4) of the North East Quarter (1/4) of Sect. One (1) in T. ship One (1) South of Range Twenty Three (23) West containing one hundred and forty two acres more or less."  In 1915 he and his wife for the sum of one dollar granted Walton Co., a right of way on the "South-west quarter of the NE Quarter SE. (1) Tp One (1) S.R. 23 W." William John Nathey died in 1916 without a Last Will and Testament. His children signed Quit Claim Deeds giving their Mother all their right, title and interest in their father’s estate that included "All of Lot Seven (7) and the Southwest Quarter of the Northeast Quarter of Section One (1) Township One (1) South Range Twenty Three (23) West, in Okaloosa County, Florida containing 142.75 acres more or less being the same land as conveyed by the United States to William J. Nathey, June 1st 1903 and recorded in Volume 17, Page 451, Walton County, Florida".

3. William John and Mary Jane Nathey are the first two names on the list of the founding members of the Methodist Church in Niceville. Their daughter, Quinnie, is also listed as a founding member.

4. Mary Jane is listed in the 1920 Census for Precinct 14 (Niceville) Okaloosa County as head of household as a widow. She is the owner of a boarding house in Niceville and is 66 years old. Listed in that census, in her household are three adult children: George R. (son) 38, is widowed and a truck driver, Eli A. (son) 31 is single and a fisherman, and Quinnie Elizabeth (dau) 27 is single and the cook for the boarding house. They are listed in the census next her son, John Jonathan Nathey, and his family.

5. Following the death of Mary Jane Nathey, September 19, 1922, the Florida Heights area of the Nathey Subdivision was sold on February 15, 1926. (See Florida Heights Sub-division Plat.)The following year the Nathey Estates Adjustment Sub-division plat was surveyed July 10, 1927 by Civil Engineer, A.P. Kastler. (See Nathey Estate Plat Including Florida Heights Sub-division.) It was approved by the Okaloosa County Commissioners August 9, 1927. The plat was filed by G. B. Anchors, as Executor of the M. J. Nathey Estate, September 30, 1927. He married her niece, Pearl Burlison. She is the daughter of Rebecca Bolton Burlison, Mary Jane’s sister. All of today’s Florida Heights and Nathey Estate subdivisions as well as the school at the corner of Nathey Street and State Road 85 as shown on the survey were part of the Nathey Homestead. The plat shows the only bridge that connects Niceville and Valparaiso on the Homestead. Before the bridge was built, the only means of getting between Niceville and Valparaiso was by boat across Boggy Bayou.

(C1) John Jonathan "J.J." Nathey (Natthey, Nathy). (Born October 30, 1873 in Florida and died February 19,1970 Valparisa, Florida.) He is buried in Rocky Memorial Cemetery, Niceville. He was a saw mill laborer Edger and worked as a Caddy on Eglin AFB golf course. He was forced to retire at age 72. On August 23, 1903 he married, Cassie Dora Wise (b. August 21, 1883 and d. (See Natthey Family Pictures.)Their children are Willis, Austin, Gladys, Grady and Ola. His homestead contained "one hundred and fifty nine acres and seventy hundreths of an acre."  It was described as "North West quarter of section thirty two in township One North of Range twenty three West of Tallahassee Meridian in Florida...." The land is now in Okaloosa Co., Florida. His brother, George, settled the Southwest quarter of the same section. On November 30, 1905 he and his wife for five hundred dollars sold land described as "North West (NW) (1/4) of Section Thirty Two (32) Township one (1) North Range Twenty Three (23)" to E.P. Rose of Lowndes County, Georgia. He is listed in the WWI Okaloosa Co Draft Registration as being born October 31, 1872. Johnny is listed with his brother L. (9) Ella L. (b. May 9, 1892 and d. Oct. 21, 1949). One son.

Leonia's paternal grandmother, Nancy Fowler, was born in Georgia. Nancy married Anderson Wise in Dale Co., AL and they lived in Coffee Co., and Geneva Co., AL before moving to Walton Co., FL. On September 1, 1858 Anderson was issued a land patent for 201.09 acres  in Covington County Alabama. On November 1, 1858, he was issued a land patent for 80.18 acres in Coffee County, Alabama. About three years after his son, Irving, received his land patent near Dorcas, Florida, Anderson also received one near Dorcas for 119.67 acres. According to the register of Confederate soldiers, Anderson Wise is listed as serving in the 57th AL Infantry Co. K and the 11th Florida Infantry Co. C. Anderson Wise filed for a Confederate pension in Walton County, FL on February 15, 1902 and it was approved July 15, 1902. His widow applied for a pension for indigent widows of deceased Confederate soldiers on November 23, 1904 and was awarded same. In his application he stated that he served from April 1862 in Company E 54th AL Infantry Regiment until the end of the war. Anderson Wise was born in Alabama and in the 1880 Census for Walton Co., FL states his parents were both born in Georgia. The Wise line he is probably related to has been traced back to Richard Wise in England. John Wise (b. 16 Nov 1617 Sydenham, Devonshire, England and d. 19 Nov 1695 Clifton, S. Chesconessex, Accomac, VA and is buried there in the Wise Cemetery), is believed to have first brought the Wise line to America. The father of Anderson Wise has not been firmly established. Questions arise from the 1850 Coffee Co. AL census where Anderson at age 22 is listed in the household of  Herrin Wise, but does not appear to be his son since he is listed last and out of birth order. My best guess is that he is Herrin's nephew and his father had died.

The mother of Leonia Wise Nathey is Elizabeth J. Crowder; daughter of William F. Crowder (in 1860 Census b. 1837; not listed with Rachel in 1885 Walton Co. Census) and Rachel Barnes (b. May 14, 1836 and d. June 3, 1903). Rachel Barnes Crowder is buried in the Crowder Cemetery. Her parents are Charles Barnes (b. 1785 in GA) and Rachel (b. 1804). Charles' wife is nineteen years younger than Charles and they are listed in the 1860 Walton Co., FL Census. Rachel Barnes Crowder had a brother, A.J. (b. 1830 GA). He and his wife had six children and are also listed in the 1860 Walton Co., FL Census as are William and Rachel Barnes Crowder with their first three children. In the 1870 Walton Co., FL Census William and Rachel Barnes Crowder are listed with their following seven children:
