DESCENDANTS OF CHARLES SILVEY

B1.  GEORGE WASHINGTON "WASH" SILVEY (born February 25, 1826 in Roane Co., TN and died March 12, 1897 in Webster Co., MO). According to the history passed down by my Aunt Eunice, George Washington Silvey came to MO from TN as a young boy with his parents, Charles Silvey and Lutitia (Howard) Silvey, between 1830 and 1834. He first settled on the Walter Goss farm at the head of Finley Creek in Webster Co. about six miles south of the town of Seymour. G. W. later settled a little farther to the west ( See Picture, George Washington Silvey). G. W. married, on October 11, 1849, MINERVA JANE 1-DENNEY (born September 4, 1832 and died November 18, 1914, Webster Co., Certificate of Death 37773) from Wayne, KY. She was a daughter of Charles Denney, Jr. (born 1785 in KY and died 1841 in MO). Her grandfather, Charles Denney, Sr. (born 1766 in VA and died 1834 in MO) married Annie Larwood. Minerva's father and her uncle, Benjamin Denney, Sr. (born 1790 in KY and died 1842 Pulaski Co., MO) were Webster Co. area pioneer settlers. Her mother was Annie Duncan (born 1798 in KY and died after 1870 in MO). The first record of Charles Silvey in MO is the 1840 Pulaski Co. Census. He is listed with his family next to the families of Charles Denny and Benjamin Denny, Sr. 

Besides Minerva Jane the other children of Charles Denney and his wife Annie were George, John, Bill, Larwood, Smiley, Mary, Catherine, and Elizabeth.. The children of Benjamin Denney and his wife, Mary Jane Mounce, were Hazel, Benjamin, Charles, Crawford, Judge John, William, Tyre, Andy, Ellett, Teriah, and Annie. There were four marriages between the Silvey and Denney lines. The Denney Family Cemetery is located in the land settled by Benjamin Denney, Sr.

In the Civil War G. W. served on the Union side in the 74th Regular Enlisted Missouri Militia as a member of Co. G. for 223 days and Co. I for 51 days. On the Confederate side there were a few hundred men in the Webster Co. State Guards under Colonel Frazier. On October 24, 1861 this force was defeated by a smaller regular Union army force in a Confederate ambush gone bad to the west of Springfield.

In the 1850 Wright Co. Census G. W. is listed as a twenty-three year old single male next to his father and his family. The name is spelled "Silvy". G. W. is listed with his wife, Minerva Jane, and five of their children: Charles, Smiley, Letitia, William, and Sarah in the 1860 Webster Co., Finley TWP Census. In the 1870 Webster Co., Finley TWP Census the name is spelled "Sylva". G. W. is listed with his wife, Minerva Jane, and nine of their children: Smiley, Letitia, William, Sarah, Jackson, George W., Zerilda, James and Susan . Their oldest son, Charles, is not listed. His mother-in-law, Annie Denney (age 72) is living in his household. By the 1880 Webster Co., Finley TWP Census G.W. and his wife had two more children, Elizabeth and Thomas. In the "History of Missouri Illustrated 1889" by Goodspeed Publishing on pages 880-881 there is a writeup on George W. Silvey.

In Webster Co. on May 26, 1858 for the price of fifty cents an acre G.W made two forty acres purchases of what is called "swamp and overflow land belonging to said county". Forty acres of this land is in Section 32 of the Finley TWP and the other forty are in Section 30. In the same county on March 31, 1872 he purchased an additiional 80 acres of "swamp and overflow land belonging to said county". Forty of those acres are in Section 32 of the Finley TWP with the other forty adjoining it in Section 29 to the north.

In March 23, 1877 G.W. bought 114.23 acres from his father and his second wife for $200 and filed the deed on February 16, 1891. This is the same 114.23 acres of public land  his father purchased on September 15, 1854 in what is now Douglas Co., Benton TWP about four miles west of Ava

On April 20, 1885 in Lincoln TWP, Douglas Co. he purchased an additional 39.81 acres of public land. that adjoins his 160 acres of lands along the Webster Co. line. That same year he also made news, "December, 1885 - Lincoln Hammond, of Douglas county, was accidentally but fatally shot by G. W. Silvey, of Seymour." This "accidental" killing took place when G.W. and most of his sons were involved in Baldknobber type activities.

His name appeared twice in the Douglas County Harold. The paper reported on him August 23, 1888, (Vol. II, No. 25) for being arrested in Douglas Co. for participating in Baldknobber type activities. "Wash Silvey, living in the northwestern part of the county, was arrested Monday and taken to Springfield charged with intimidating homesteaders." Baldknobbing was a family affair. Besides G.W., at least three of his seven sons, one of his son-in-laws, and a brother of G.W. besides relations through his marriage were involved and eventually arrested for Baldknobbing activities. In December 1886 three relatives of Lincoln Hammond that had been killed by G.W. in 1885 testified against the relatives of G.W. arrested for Baldknobbing activities against Hugh Ratcliff and Caleb Atwood. They were Tom Hammond, George Hammond, and Bill Hammond. At the time G.W. was arrrested one son, George, had recently died in prison on May 25, 1888 while serving Federal time for violating the Homestead Act. George was buried back home in the Silvey Cemetery. It is hard to understand what real threat the new homesteaders in the area were to the G.W. Silvey family members and their many relatives compared to the risk of being arrested and sent to prison. Some of those family members not involved in acts of intimidation chose to testify against those that did. One of his daughters, Zerilda (Silvey) Denney, stated in testimony concerning family participation in Baldknobbing that "She did not believe in it and was mad about the matter..." In one case a relative was the arresting constable.

Some accounts of homesteader intimidation followed drinking and the display of a pistol which contributed to bad judgement and false courage. A pistol was not a firearm common to farmers and those owning one in rural areas were usually either a law officer or a potential outlaw. The best explanation for the recurring intimidation of the homesteaders was to keep them from claiming land used for open grazing and desired by sons and grandsons to homestead. Ironically G.W. was reported by Julia Denny as saying in 1886 that "had known the men were going to whip Ratcliff that he would have stopped the whole thing."  Unfortunately he did not stop two of his sons and seven relatives from their "BALL KNOB" raid that got them all arrested and his sons Jack and George sent to prison. That raid was apparently planned by the male family members not attending church that evening. On November 13, 1890 (Vol.IV, No.6) the Douglas County Harold reported, "On Monday the 19th, Wash Silvey of Washington township was thrown from his horse and seriously injured. Dr. M. H. Osborn is attending him at the residence of Mr. Harlis, on Wilson Hollow." This may be the home of Mr. Hargus. His son, William Silvey, had married Mary Ann Hargus and after her death he married Clara Hargus. William, Mary Ann and Clara are all buried in the Webster Co. Silvey Cemetery. 

G.W. is buried with his wife, Minerva Jane, in the Webster Co. Silvey Cemetery. (See Silvey Cemetery plot.) Minerva also bought land. On February 27, 1894 she purchased land in Douglas Co., Lincoln TWP from D.A. Philpot that adjoined those of her husband. G. W. and Minerva had twelve children:

    C1.  CHARLES SILVEY (born August 9, 1850 and died March 9, 1883). He married SARAH ANN 1-LOFTIN (born 1848 in NC and died ?) on May 6, 1869. He received a homestead in Douglas Co., Lincoln TWP on November 4, 1876 of 158.55 acres. His homestead was adjacent to the land in Douglas Co. and Webster Co. that his father settled. Charles is listed with his wife and children Minerva and William C. in the 1880 Douglas Co. Census. Besides his wife and two children is Calvin J. Silvey (age15). His mother was Caroline Silvey, an aunt of Charles. Charles died young at the age of 33.  He is buried with his wife, Ann, in the Webster Co. Silvey Cemetery. (See Silvey Cemetery plot.) The children of Charles and Sarah Ann are:

           D1.  MINERVA JANE SILVEY (born 1871 and died 1934). She is listed with her parents in the 1880 Douglas Co. Census. She appears to be the Jane Silvey (born May 1874) listed as a border in the home of Marion Silvey in the 1900 Greene Co. Census. She married _______GREENLEA. No more information.

           D2.  WILLIAM "CLINT" SILVEY (born January 22, 1874 and died May 1, 1936 in Nevada, Vernon Co., MO). He is buried in the Douglas Co. Dogwood Cemetery. Clint is listed with his parents in the 1880 Douglas Co. Census. He married (1) MOLLY "MARY" 1-BURKS. He married (2) MELVINA JANE HOOTEN (born June 22, 1887 and died December 26, 1977). My Mom remembers him living in his father's homestead house. He and his second wife are listed in the 1910 Greene Co. Census and the 1920 Greene Co. Census. He is the keeper of a boarding house in the 3-Ward of Springfield. She is buried in the Webster Co. Liberty Cemetery. Their child is:

                   E1.  PERRY JACKSON SILVEY (born September 18, 1927). He married  (1) OPAL TALMAGE PARSONS (born September 24, 1928 ). They had three children. He married (2) LINDA NEDAN KAREFF (born June 27, 1945). No issue.

    C2.  SMILEY SILVEY (born May 12, 1852 and died December 18, 1891). He married JOYCE ELLEN 1-WRIGHT (born June 1, 1851 and died July 3, 1939, Webster Co., Death Certificate 27159) on January 18, 1872. She was the daughter of Burgess Wright and Rachel Goss. Smiley Silvey received on July 27, 1885 in Webster Co. a 80 acre homestead. He is listed with his parents in the 1870 Webster Co. Finley TWP Census. There are seven known children of Smiley and Joyce based on census records.  By the 1900 Webster Co., Finley TWP Census three of their children are living in the household headed by Joyce Cardwell. They are Lillie, Susan, and Yuma. Joyce Ellen must have married a Cardwell after the early death of Smiley at age 39. Smiley is buried with his wife, Ellen, in the Webster Co. Silvey Cemetery. (See Silvey Cemetery plot.)

            D1.  WILLIAM FRANKLIN "PISTOL BILL"  SILVEY (born October 28, 1872 and died April 22, 1972). He was apparently named after his uncle, William Franklin Wright, who married his dad's sister, Sarah Catherine "Katy" Silvey. (His uncle, W. F. Wright, was indicted on Federal charges for violating the Homestead Act in 1886 but later severed as the constable of Lincoln township in 1891 where he arrested his brother-in-law, Tom Silvey.) He married LUCINDA CATHERINE 1-CARDWELL (born July 17, 1871and died October 8, 1937 in Greene Co., Springfield, Certificate of Death 37662). She is buried in the Webster Co. Seymour Masonic Cemetery and is a daughter of Taylor Cardwell and Amillie Jones. While he was a tall lanky redhead, Bill does not fit the reserved Silvey image. He served fourteen years as City Marshall in Seymour. During prohibition days he worked for detective W.D. Griffin in Memphis, TN where he was given credit for seeking out numerous bootleggers and reporting them to Federal agents. He could have found in Webster Co. a fair share of bootleggers. During prohibition fifty citizens of Webster Co. were arrested on bootlegging charges and sent to prison. There are many local newspaper articles concerning him including: July 2, 1953, two names have been received for the office of City Marshal. First to file was William (Pistol Bill) Silvey, latest was Huey Vanmetter; Nov 12 1953, Seymour City Marshal Pistol Bill Silvey was suspended by Mayor Cox, for conduct unbecoming an officer of the City, and tampering with the lock on City Jail; Nov 19 1953, Pistol Bill Silvey, an 81 year old Minion of the law, is reinstated by Mayor and City Council; Aug 2, 1962, W. F. (Pistol Bill) Silvey was elected as Marshal by voters, and is now 89 years old (see September 20, 1962 article in the Seymour Citizen, "Seymour's Most Famous Citizen"); April 15 1965, charges were filed on Buck Marlin, after he struck Pistol Bill Silvey on the head with a pistol, and pointed it at Bill and pulled the trigger. The pistol did not fire; April 27 1972, death claims former City Marshal, Pistol Bill Silvey at the age of 100. He was a active law officer in Seymour and Webster Co., MO since 1910. William F. Silvey received in Webster Co. a 120 acre homestead on March 13, 1905. In the 1910 Webster Co., Finley TWP Census William and his wife are listed with all nine of their children. In the 1920 Webster Co., Finley TWP Census seven of their children are at home, one being a daughter, Maria, born after the 1910 census. The children of William and Catherine are:

                    E1.  WILSON SILVEY (born January 11, 1893 and died January 11, 1993 in CA). He married RESSIE 1-MATNEY (born 1904 and died ?). She was the adopted Indian daughter (unverified) of William Matney (born ? and died August 25, 1952 in Seymour). His wife was Susan Copley Matney. Wilson (age 26) and his wife, Ressie (age 15) are listed in the 1920 Webster Co., Finley TWP Census. He was a blacksmith. When William Matney died in 1952, his daughter Ressie was living in CA. (Information from Julia Matney Bixler.) Wilson and Ressie had six children.

                    E2.  SHERMAN SILVEY (born June 12, 1894 and died ?). He married CLOEA THELMA MCKIDDY (born February 2, 1907 and died August 17, 1945 in Bonner Springs, KS) on April 25, 1920. She was the daughter of William Franklin McKiddy and Alice Bell Cox. They had five children. (Information on Birch genealogy as researched by Terry Lytle Birch.)

                    E3.  MABEL SILVEY (BARKER) (born March 8, 1897 and died December 24, 1945). She married ROY BARKER (born January 26, 1896 and died November 21, 1986). They had five children.

                    E4.  FANNY SILVEY (born May 25, 1900 and died ?). She married _______ GRANVILLE HELMS (born ? and died ?). They had five children. No more information.

                    E5.  BERT SILVEY (born January 25, 1902 and died December 2000). He lived in Iowa. No more information.

                    E6.  CELLIE SILVEY (DENNEY) and (CARDWELL) (born April 25, 1904 and November 30, 1982). She married (1) MCKINNLEY 4-DENNEY (born May 25, 1898 and November 30, 1982). They had one child. She married (2) VERNON 4-CARDWELL and they had no children. She is buried in the Webster Co. Harmony Cemetery.

                    E7.  ADA SILVEY (WINGO) (born October 18, 1906 and died July 11, 1987). She married CECIL 1-WINGO (born March 12, 1902 and died March 27, 1984). Cecil is a son of William Wingo (born July 15, 1873 and died December 12, 1946) and Myra Cox (born May 12, 1879 and died 1954). Ada and Cecil had two children.

                    E8.  ZULA SILVEY (FANN) (born March 10, 1909 and died August 3, 1955). She married HERMAN 1-FANN  (born  March 5, 1899 and died December 27, 1984). They had three children.

                    E9. BEULAH SILVEY (FANN) (born March 10, 1909 and died July 1, 2005). She married ALBERT 2-FANN (born July 6, 1904 and died February 7, 1989 in Webster Co.). They had one known child.

                    E10. MARIE SILVEY (born abt 1916 and died ?). She married (1) ________AWENS (born ? and died ?) and (2) _______IMRIE (born ? and died?). No more information.

            D2.  JERRY B. SILVEY (born January 15, 1874 and died July 10, 1954, Ozark Co., Certificate of Death 23858). Married CYNIA ROLAND (born April 9, 1872 and died May 28, 1949, Greene Co., Certificate of Death 15620). Her first husband was David Roland. She is buried in the Webster Co. Cardwell Chapel Cemetery. In the 1910 Webster Co., Finley TWP Census he is listed with his wife and four step-children. His mother, Joice E. Cardwell (age 58), resides with him. He and Cynia had one known child. By the 1920 Green Co., 3-WD Springfield Census he is a widower working as a carpenter and residing as a lodger. He is buried in the Webster Co. Silvey Cemetery. (See Silvey Cemetery plot.) No more information.

                    E1.  TED SILVEY (born July 10, 1910 and died January 4, 1978 in Webster Co.). He is buried in the Webster Co. Silvey Cemetery. (See Silvey Cemetery plot.)

            D3.  DELLA JANE SILVEY (born August 24, 1875 in Seymour and died October 19, 1968 Chillicothe, Livingston Co., MO). In the 1880 Webster Co., Finley TWP Census she is listed as a four year old daughter in the household of her father, Smiley Silvey. Della married CHARLES 1-BROWN (born November 10, 1871 and died June 26, 1936 Braymer, Caldwell Co., MO) on June 12, 1892 in Seymour, MO. (Information on the children of Della and Charles Brown contributed by Jody Baldwin.) Their children are:

                    E1.  ELSIE MAE BROWN (born June 17, 1894 Seymour and died June 14, 1971 Braymer, Caldwell Co., MO). She married JESSE LEE WALLACE (born April 22, 1889 and died February 12, 1966). They had three children.:

They had three children. She married (2) JOHN CARMAN (born August 2, 1906 and died September 12, 1992) on April 18, 1941.

                    E3.  THYRA PEARL BROWN (born November 20, 1898 in Seymour and died August 8, 1971 in Kansas City, Jackson Co., MO). She married  RALPH LEE YUILLE (born May 15, 1896 in Ray Co., MO and died December 1, 1967 in Chillicothe, Livingston Co., MO) on April 14, 1916 in Carroll Co., MO. They had two children.

                    E4.  LOUIS RAY BOWN (born December 28, 1901 and died March 19, 1938 Braymer, Caldwell Co, MO). He married ARTICE C. BARNES (born November 20, 1901 and died February 6, 1997) on December 24, 1921 in Chillicothe, Livingston Co., MO. They had two children.

            D4.  MARY C. "MOLLIE" SILVEY (BRIXEY) (born September 6, 1878 and died January 14, 1968). She married JAMES O. 1-BRIXEY (born 1869 and died ?). Buried in the Douglas Co. Denney Cemetery. He was the son of Lesel Brixey and Margaret Buchanan.

                    E1.  HARRY MONROE BRIXEY (born August 6, 1895 and died June 9, 1991). He married MYRTLE 2-BURKS ( born  ? and died ?).  Buried in the Douglas Co. Dogwood Cemetery. They had one child.

            D5.  LILLIE MINERVA SILVEY (born September 10, 1884 and died October 10, 1928). By the 1900 Webster Co., Finley TWP Census Lillie  M. (age 15) is living with two sisters in the household headed by her mother, Joyce Cardwell (age 48). She married J. P. MAHONEY (born ? and died ?). She is buried in the Webster Co. Silvey Cemetery. (See Silvey Cemetery plot.) They are not found in census records. No more information.

            D6. SUSAN "ABBIE" SILVEY (GOSS)  (born February 23,1887 and died December 21, 1963). By the 1900 Webster Co., Finley TWP Census Susan A. (age 13) is living with two sisters in the household headed by her mother, Joyce Cardwell (age 48). She married in Webster Co., ALFRED ROBY GOSS (born November 28, 1877 and died after 1967). They had four children. No more information.

            D7.  YUMA BELL SILVEY (born January 15, 1889 and died July 9, 1923). By the 1900 Webster Co., Finley TWP Census Yuma B. (age 11) is living with two sisters in the household headed by her mother, Joyce Cardwell (age 48). She married STEVE RYAN. She is buried in the Webster Co. Silvey Cemetery. (See Silvey Cemetery plot.) No more information.

    C3.  LETITIA ANN "TISH" SILVEY (LOFTON) (born April 7, 1854 and died October 10, 1877). She is listed with her parents in the 1870 Webster Co. , Finley TWPCensus. She married in Webster Co. on August 11, 1872, CORNELIUS 2-LOFTIN (born 1850 and died ?). No known children. No more information.

    C4.  WILLIAM M. "BILL" SILVEY (born August 3, 1856 Finley TWP and died June 29, 1923, Webster Co., Certificate of Death 20650). He is listed with his parents in the 1870 Webster Co., Finley TWP Census. He married (1) _______ SILVEY (born ? and died ?). He married (2) MARY ANN 1-HARGUS (born September 15, 1855 and died January 10, 1886). He married (3) CLARA 2-HARGUS (born February 29, 1843 and died July 7, 1927, Webster Co., Certificate of Death 23458) who was a sister of his second wife. Perhaps he is also listed as William A. Silvey. In 1876 in Douglas Co. William A. Silvey received a 160 acre homestead. He is mentioned as a defended in the 1886 Baldknobber raid but it is not clear if he was charged. He is listed in the 1880 Webster Co. Census at age 24 with his wife, Mary A., at age 25. He had all his children with Mary. William and Mary are buried in the Webster Co. Silvey Cemetery. (See Silvey Cemetery plot.) Buried in the cemetery is also Clara (Hargus) Silvey. Only two of their three child were living by the 1900 Webster Co., Finley TWP Census. He and his wife are only in their household by the 1910 Webster Co., Finley TWP Census. The children of William and Mary are:

            D1.  JACKIE SILVEY (born after 1880 and died before 1900). He is buried in the Webster Co. Silvey Cemetery. (See Silvey Cemetery plot.) By the 1900 Webster Co., Finley TWP Census, this child had died . He may be the Jackson Silvey, Jr.who deceased on August 31, 1899 and is listed in the Webster Co. obituaries. "Jackson silvey, Jr., who was serving a short jail sentence for destroying a watermelon patch, died in jail Sunday night from an attack of Cholira Marbus. The body was taken to his home near Sarvis Point for burial." No more information.

            D2.  IDA SILVEY (born December 1, 1881 and died ?). Married JOHN RAGSDALE (born ? and died ?).  No more information.

            D3.  MARY JANE SILVEY (WINGO) and (CARSON) (born May 31, 1884 and August 14, 1958). She married (1) LEE ANDREW 2-WINGO (born February 1875 in MO and died 1952 in Webster Co.). He was the son of John A. Wingo (age 74) from Virginia and Anna Sneuter (age 70) from Kentucky that are listed in the 1920 Webster Co. , Finley TWP Census. Mary and Lee have three babies buried in the Webster Co. Silvey Cemetery. (See Silvey Cemetery plot.) She is listed with her husband and oldest child in the 1900 Webster Co., East Benton TWP Census. It is unverified that she married (2) WALTER HERBERT 1-CARSON (born November 4, 1903 and died ?). He was the son of J. Carson and L. Black. (The information on the descendants of Mary Jane and Lee posted by Pat Colton on RootsWeb shows nine children.) By the 1910 Webster Co. West Dallas TWP Census  two of their five children at that time were deceased. The seven known children of Mary Jane (age 36) and Lee (age 44) by the 1920 Webster Co., Finley TWP Census where the name is spelled "Wings" are:

                    E3. CLARENCE WINGO (born September 4, 1907 and died January 10, 1976 in Wright Co.). Buried in the Webster Co. Harmony Cemetery. He married NELLIE PLASTER (born March 16, 1910 and died March 15, 1998). They had four children. (See 1924 Ragsdale School.)

                    E4. LEONARD SAMUEL WINGO (born April 8, 1911 and died November 4, 1993). Buried in the Webster Co. Harmony Cemetery. He married AGNES _______ (born ? and died December 2, 1998 at the age of 88).  Buried in the Greene Co. Galloway Cemetery. They had no children. (See 1924 Ragsdale School.)

                    E5. NERLY ANN WINGO (born April 8, 1911 and died October 1, 1927). Buried in the Webster Co. Harmony Cemetery. No more information.

                    E6. LOREN WINGO (born 1919 (twin) and died August 9, 1997). He was single. No more information.

                    E7. LORENE WINGO (CUMMINS) and (TURNER) (born 1919 (twin) and died February 29, 2000). She married (1) CLARENCE 1-CUMMINS (born ? and died ?) and had one son. She married (2) AUDIE 2-TURNER (born ? and died ?) and had one daughter. No more information.

    C5.  SARAH CATHERINE "KATY" SILVEY (WRIGHT) (born September 1, 1858 and died 1924). She is listed with her parents in the 1870 Webster Co., Finley TWP Census. She married WILLIAM FRANKLIN "FRANK" 2-WRIGHT (born May 19, 1857 and died April 18, 1938). Both of his parents were born in NC. Frank Wright was one of nine men related by blood or marrage that in 1886 were identified with Baldknobber activities in the Douglas Co. W.F. Wright became the constable of Lincoln township, Douglas Co. and in that capacity in 1891 arrested his brother-in-law, Tom Silvey, for Baldknobber type intimidation activity. His nephew, William Franklin "Pistol Bill" Silvey was named for him. Three unnamed babies of Katy and Frank and their daughter Lillie are buried in the Webster Co. Silvey Cemetery. (See Silvey Cemetery plot.) Frank and his family are listed in the 1900 Webster Co., Finley TWP Census and in the 1910 Webster Co., Finley TWP Census. In the 1900 Webster Co., Finley TWP Census their six of nine surviving children are listed as: George W., Lillie, Sarah E., Laura C., Benjamin H. and Merrell D.  

            D1.  GEORGE WASHINGTON "WASH" WRIGHT (born May 29, 1878 and died September 11, 1947). In the 1920 Webster Co. Census he is the only child listed with his parents. No more information.

            D2.  LILLIE WRIGHT (born August 9, 1884 and died September 30, 1901). She is buried in the Webster Co. Silvey Cemetery. (See Silvey Cemetery plot.) No more information.

            D3.  SARAH E. WRIGHT (born September 1886 and died ?). She is not listed with the family in the 1910 Webster Co., Finley TWP Census. No more information.

    C6.  JACKSON "JACK JR" SILVEY (born on November 25, 1860 and died October 9, 1949, Webster Co., Death Certificate 36137). He was born on land settled by his father, George Washington Silvey. He is listed with his parents in the 1870 Webster Co., Finley TWP Census. As a teenager he went to California. His uncle, Smiley Denny, is listed in the 1860 Nevada Co. CA Census as a Teamster. Jackson (age 19) is listed as a farm laborer with Smiley Denny and his family in the 1880 Placer Co. , CA Census. After returning home, on December 24, 1885 he married REBECCA ANN EMBREY (born March 14, 1868 and died March 3, 1930, Webster Co., Death Certificate 11513). (See Marriage License.) She was the daughter of John A. Embrey (born November 7, 1841 in KY and died June 25, 1911 in Webster Co., MO) and Mary Jane Johnston (born October 28, 1845 near Pocahontas, AK and died January 11, 1923 in Webster Co., MO). Her parents were married by Logan Hargus, Justice of the Peace, in Webster Co., on May 10, 1863 and they lived in Seymour. Her mother, Mary Jane, is listed with her parents at age four in the 1850 Wright Co. Census and she is also listed as the only child with her parents at age fourteen in the 1860 Webster Co., Benton TWP Census. During the Civil War Rebecca's father, John A. Embrery, served  for the Union in the Eight Missouri Cavalry, Co. C. from the Webster Co., Benton Township. Her parents are buried in the Webster Co. Seymour Masonic Cemetery along with some of their children and their spouses. (Helen, a daughter of Lloyd Silvey, remembers visiting her great-grandmother, Mary Jane Embrery, at her residence in Seymour.)

Rebecca's mother, Mary Jane Johnston, was the daughter of Calvin S. Johnston from KY and Lucinda Ray Davis from AK. Calvin S. Johnston married Lucinda "Cinda" Davis on January 30, 1845 in Lawrence Co., Territory of AK. It appears that the senior Johnston and Davis families came together from AK between 1847 and 1850 and settled near each other in Wright Co., MO. The parents of Calvin S. Johnston were James Baptist Johnston and Elizabeth Smith. James was born in KY and Elizabeth was born in 1804 in VA. There is a marriage listing in Allen Co., KY for James B. Johns(t)on marrying Elizabeth Smith on May 3, 1823 . Elizabeth could be the daughter of Samuel Smith. Samuel filed for a Revolutionary War Pension on May 13, 1833 in Allen Co., KY. He served in the VA Militia and was born in 1762. 

Next door to Calvin Johnson and his family by the 1860 Webster Co., Benton TWP Census was living his mother, Elizabeth Johnston and his brother, Alvin (born October 1828 in KY and died ?). Alvin apparently never married.  The other children of Elizabeth and her husband based on the 1850 Wright Co. Census were Mahala, Nancy, and James. Mahala (born 1833 in IL and died January 1, 1888) married Tyre Denney on August 27, 1856. Nancy married H. H. Cathey in Webster Co. on September 6, 1856. James B. (born October1839 and died ?) married (1) Mary E. ______ and (2) Narcissa by the 1900 Webster Co., West Benton TWP Census. In that census Alvin M., a brother of James B., was living in his household. In the 1850 Wright Co. Census there was also another James B. that was born in 1820. Louisa Johnston (born 1831 in IL and died ? ) that married Moses Roley (born 1824 in KY and died in Webster Co., MO) was apparently another child of Elizabeth and James. Moses Roley, who served in the Co. C. of the Eight Missouri Cavalry, is buried in the Cardwell Chapel Cemetery. Since the husband of Elizabeth is not listed in the 1850 census he probably died by 1850 in AK.

Charles C. Davis (born February 14, 1800 in SC and died June 18, 1872 at age 78 and buried in Davis-Cain Hill Cemetery in Oregon Co., MO) was the father of Lucinda Davis. Charles C. Davis is listed with his wife, Cynthia Shaver from TN, and two teenage daughters, Elizabeth and Amelia, both born in AK in the 1850 Wright Co. Census. On one side they were living next to their married sons, Abijah and Eliphas, both born in AK and their families. On the other side they were living next to Calvin S. Johnston and their daughter Lucinda. In the Webster Co. 1870, 1880 and 1900 Census records Lucinda Johnston was living with John and Mary Jane Embrery and is listed as mother-in-law and the wife's mother. During the Civil War the father of Mary Jane, Calvin S. Johnston, like her husband, John A. Embrery, served in Co. C. of the Eight Missouri Cavalry. Her father died of dysentery on March 13, 1864 in Rolla on his way home on furlough. Her mother filed for a widows pension. Calvin S. John(t)son made full payment to purchased 120 acres of public land in Section 13 of Webster Co. on June 1, 1859. His widow, Lucinda R. Johnston, received a 40 acre homestead in the same section twenty years later on June 30, 1879. (Davis and Johnston information provided by Chester Davis, Lorri Bales and Betty Mangham.) 

The sisters of Rebecca Ann (Silvey) were Martha Jane (Wheat), Ida (Hargus), Lucinda (Parnell) and Ava C. (Eaken). Her brothers were James W. Embrey and Charles Embrey. Buried in the Webster Co. Seymour Masonic Cemetery are James W. Embrery (born February 23, 1864 and died November 30, 1942) and his wife Martha C. (Dillion) Embrery (born March 1, 1862 and died December 9, 1946); Lucinda C. (Embrery) Parnell (born September 26, 1870 and died March 2, 1951) and her husband Lemuel G. Parnell (born March 3, 1867 and died November 10, 1953); and Ava C. (Embrery) Eaken (born August 18, 1883 and died August 11, 1969 and her husband Columbus L. Eaken (born July 15, 1873 and died July 12, 1949). This older generation often left the letter (e) out of the spelling of their surnames which gave the spelling as Silvy, Embry, and Denny.

After the Civil War in Taney Co. both Union and Confederate veterans united and formed a local "law and order" group to combat crime. The various groups met on the treeless top of a high cedar mountain and were dubbed by their enemies as the "Baldknobbers". Their activities, however, went beyond efforts to combat crime which ran afoul of state and federal authorities. Jack Jr. was one of nine men related by blood or marriage that in 1886 were identified with Baldknobber activities in Douglas Co. after a "Ball Knob" raid on the homesteads of Hugh Ratlif and Calab Atwood. Their rendezvous site for the raid was at Sarvis Point. His uncle with the same name was referred to as Jack Sr. The Baldknobbers were charged with violating the Homestead Act. They sought to discourage settlers from homesteading in areas that were used for open grazing or desired as homesteads by younger family members. Hugh Ratcliff testified, "They whipped me. Jack Silvey and a young man by the name of Elliott Denny whipped me. They gave me nine licks, and a man by the name of John Denny was the one that drew the pistol on me." Jack Jr. apparently moved to Taney Co. by 1887 before he was incarcerated for two or three months on federal charges for violating the Homestead Act as part of the local "law and order" group. His family and friends maintained his farm until he was released. As Jackson Silvy he made full payment on February 6, 1892 for 40 acres of public land in Taney Co. and received on September 25, 1894 in Taney Co. a 160 acre homestead. On his homestead in Taney Co. he raised cattle which he would drive down the road past his parents home to reach the railhead at Seymour. He eventually moved to Webster Co. from Taney Co. to settled on his parents land. The land, however, was not good bottom farmland so he continued to mostly make his living raising cattle. His brother, Charles, received his homestead in Doughlas Co., Lincoln, TWP in 1877. This homestead of 158.55 acres joined the land where Jackson lived in the Webster Co., Finley TWP.

Jackson Silvy built a two story painted clap board house with front and back porches across the road from the house of his father, George W. Silvey. After his father died, his mom, Minerva, lived in his home. The design was common for the substantial farm homes on its day built in the South and the Midwest. The house had four rooms downstair. They were the living room, parlor, kitchen and storage for the cooking flower and grain. The four rooms upstairs were bedrooms. Considering the isolation from major towns where Jackson built his home, his house was by far one of the most respectable in the area and was always open to visitors. His granddaughter, Helen, remembers that people were always stopping in on her grandparents which she also did coming home from school. She also believes that they would take in boarders. His house is still standing. He eventually used his dad's old home place across the road for storage and a blacksmith shop. The blacksmith shop was mostly used for shoeing horses by him and his four sons. He seems to have made his money raising cattle. He had five brothers and one of his sisters with their families making about nineteen nieces and nephews living in the area. His four sons, Charles, John, Lloyd, and Luther and their families with his nineteen grandchildren also all lived nearby. They could all visit them at anytime. Life for Jackson and Rebecca was probably the best that could be enjoyed in a rural area. ( See Picture, Jack, Jr. and Family) and (See Picture, Four Jackson Silvey Generations). In time, however, all of their descendants eventually moved away from their home places. Charles, Lloyd and Luther moved to Seymour and John to Ava. In the 1910 Webster Co., Finley TWP Census three of their six children are still lived at home with them. They are Ethel, Loyd and Luther. In the 1920 Webster Co., Finley TWP Census two of their six children are still at home with them. They are Charles and Luther. Also living with them are Joice E. Silvey (age 68), the widow of his brother Smiley and Alfred Roland (age 9) who is apparently a grand step child related to Joice. Jackson and his wife are buried in the Webster Co. Silvey Cemetery. (See Silvey Cemetery plot.) On their gravestones their name is spelled "Silvy".

            D1.  CHARLES FRANKLIN "CHARLIE" SILVEY (born September 24, 1886 and died October 5, 1972). He was born on his grandfather's farm in Webster Co. before the family moved to Taney Co. in 1887 to stake his father's homestead. In the 1910 Colorado, Garfield Co. Census at he age of 23 he is listed as a boarder in the household of his uncle, James D. Hargus, and his wife, Ida. Ida was one of his mother's sisters. He married MAGGIE MAY BORING (born November 11, 1893 in Washington Co. and died April 14, 1983 in Webster Co.). The MFA in Seymour is a farmers cooperative association. It was first organized in 1919. It was reorganized in 1936 and Charles Silvey was elected president. His brother, Lloyd Silvey, was elected vice president. J. M. Silvey, L.B. Silvey, and Charles Silvey with some of their neighbors bought shares in the MFA. In starting the MFA Lloyd Silvey explain, "We started up with just a very few sacks of feed. It was still during the depression. No one had any money." Charles served on the local corn hog committee and they encouraged farmers to use fertilizer. Bone meal was used to make fertilizer. Lloyd reported, " I picked up bones and sold them to make fertilizer." Charles and Maggie are both buried in the Webster Co. Seymour Masonic Cemetery. Charles and Maggie had one daughter.

                    E1.  IRENE BONITA SILVEY (CARDWELL) (born June 14, 1914 and died October 8, 1975). She married ELI GLEN 2-CARDWELL (born October 20, 1906 and died June 27, 1989). He served in the Navy. They had seven children. (See 1924 Ragsdale School.)

            D2.  JOHN WASHINGTON "RED JOHN" SILVEY (born January 26, 1888 in Taney Co. and died September 14, 1961 in Douglas Co.). He married (1) FRANCIS J. TAYLOR (born December 21, 1888 and died April 13, 1921, Webster Co., Death Certificate 11329). She is buried in the Harmony Cemetery. They had six children.  He is listed with his first wife in the 1910 Webster Co., Finley TWP Census. In the 1920 Webster Co., Finley TWP Census he is listed with his wife and the first of their five children. There is a son named Phill (age 8) listed in the census, but Cleo is not listed. John married (2) VERBA J. 3-WINGO (born July 28, 1898 and died July 8, 1981 in Douglas Co). Verba Silvey is a daughter of William Wingo (born July 15, 1873 and died December 12, 1946) and Myra Cox (born May 12, 1879 and died November 9, 1879). He is buried in the Douglas Co. Ava Cemetery. Verba and John had one child.

                    E1.  LEONARD SILVEY (born August 20, 1910 and died December 30, 1996). He married (1) GLADYS V. CORNELISON (born July 2, 1909 and died July 20, 1973 in Douglas Co.). They had one son, a doctor in Bethney, OK, who died in his early fifties of a heart attack. They also had four daughters. He married (2) EDITH (KASTING) JOHNSON (born ? and died October 12, 2000 at the age of 90). He had no children by his second wife. (See 1924 Ragsdale School.)

                    E2.  CLEO SILVEY (SELF) (born November 2, 1911 and died May 15, 2002). She married MATT SELF (born August 1915 and died March 31, 1992). They adopted two children. (See 1924 Ragsdale School.)

                    E3   ARNOLD E. SILVEY (born November 23, 1914 and died August 15, 1983). He married VIRGINIA  KNOLL (born August 11, 1919 and died ?). They had four children. (See 1924 Ragsdale School.)

                    E4.  WILLIAM AARON "RED" SILVEY (born August 9, 1916 and died December 2, 1869). He moved to WA when he was 19 or 20. He married _______ . His marriage ended in a divorce with no children. He drove oil trucks and was killed in a oil truck accident. No more information.

                    E5.  LEONA MAE SILVEY (COMER) (born January 15, 1919 and died September 23, 2006). She married JOHN PAUL COMER  (born December 31, 1912 and died June 1977). They had six children.                     E6.  RUBY FAY SILVEY (LOCKHART) (born February 9, 1921 and died January 3, 2005). She married WALTER LOCKHART (born ?) on July 17, 1941. They had four children.

          D3.  ETHEL MAE SILVEY (PHILPOTT, HALL and STURDEFANT) (born December 2, 1889 in Taney Co. and died August 17, 1974). She married (1) JOHN D. PHILPOTT (born July 5, 1888 and died November 20, 1940). They lived just south of the rest of the family toward Dogwood in Douglas Co. where they had good bottom land to farm. She married (2) _______ HALL (born ? and died ?). She married (3) NORMAN STURDEFANT (born ? and died ?). All her children were by her first husband.

                    E1.  LOUISE PHILPOTT (MACKEY) (born 1917 and died January 2, 2002 at the age of 84). She married RALPH 1-MACKEY (born 1914 and died May 20, 1987). They had two sons.

                    E2.  LAWRENCE PHILPOTT (born ? and died August 25, 2006 at the age of 91). He married (1) FREDA IPOCK (born ? and died ?). They had one daughter, but divorced. He moved to the D.C. area and started a construction company. He married (2) MARIAN ?_______. By his second marriage he had two daughters. No more information.

                    E3.  DAYAN PHILPOTT (MACKEY, MILLER, and BURMAN) (born ? and died ?). She married (1) ROY 2-MACKEY (born ? and died ?). She married (2) _______ 1-MILLER (born ? and died ?). They had two daughters. She married (3) BOB BURMAN (born ? and died ?). 

                    E4.  VERONA CLAD PHILPOTT (CARDWELL) (born December 10, 1912 and died May 14, 1992). She married (1) OTIS 3-CARDWELL (born ? and died ?). Married (2) DEWEY DWYAN PIPPIN (born  July 16, 1921? and died ?). She had no children.

            D4.  ANDREW J. SILVEY (born February 13, 1893 in Taney Co. and died February 21, 1893 at eight days old). He is buried in the Webster Co. Silvey Cemetery. (See Silvey Cemetery plot.)

            D5.  JAMES "LLOYD" SILVEY (born December 15, 1894 in Taney Co. and died January 11, 1982). As a young man of 18 or 19 he went to Springfield to attended teachers college and mostly enjoyed learing about music but returned shortly to farming.  He married FLORINE JOHNS (born February 13, 1896 and died December 31, 1988 in Seymour) on January 10, 1915 in the home of John W. Silvey. The service was officiated by the Rev. Luke Marler with the Rev. John Silvey and the Rev. Liege Carpenter as witnesses. She was born in Christian Co., MO near Nixa and was the daughter of William "Will" Robert Johns (born December 6, 1868 and died December 14, 1959) and Sally Caroline Patterson (born August 9, 1869 and died May 10, 1900). (See Picture, Four W.R. Johns Generations). Sally was the daughter of Albert C. Patterson and Elizabeth A. McCroskey. The parents of her father were William Johns (born November 28, 1828 and died January 13, 1901) and Margaret J. Pete (born June 24, 1839 and died May 5, 1926). Both of his  parents were born in Virginia. Her father and his brother Joseph went to Iowa, near Des Moines, during the latter part of the Civl War. Joseph later went on to Kansas and William went on to Missouri. William E. Johns lived in Cedar Co., Ozark Co. and Christian Co., before moving to Webster Co. and settling south of Seymour. William and Sally Johns had two children: Florine and her sister, Essa (born July 28, 1897 and died December 10, 1900). When Florine was just four years old both her mother, who was thirtyone, and her sister, who was three, died. Her father went to CA and to CO for a short time following the death of her mother. Florine lived with her Grandmother Johns until she married. Her widowed father married Jennie Lewis and they had one son, William R. Johns. After the death of Jennie her father married Surilda Cardwell and they had one daughter, Agnes Johns (Maples) (born December 26, 1912 and died June 21, 2007 in Primrose Place, Springfield at the age of 94) and a son, James Edward Johns. Agnes lived in Nixa and is buried in the Webster Co. Seymour Masonic Cemetery.

Lloyd and Florine first lived on part of the farm where his father, Jackson Silvey, lived. They are listed with their first two children in the 1920 Webster Co., Finley TWP Census. It as after the birth of their first two children they moved to Fort Morgan, CO for about three months. They worked in the sugar beet industry and he did carpenter work. When they returned to Webster Co., MO they moved on to a 120-acre farm given by his father on the south part of the Silvey home place seven miles south of Seymour. About 40 acres were in Douglas Co. that his grandfather bought in 1885. It was not good farm land, but there they built their first house. It was a four room oak clap board house that was not painted. It had wooden pine floors and windows with screens. Logs from the property were cut in to lumber for the house by a neighbor with a portable steam saw. On the property they also had a cellar spring house, large chicken house, smoke house, barn and privy. The house and the cellar are still standing. Here their last two children were born. The four rooms were the living room where Lloyd and Florine slept. Helen and Velma slept in one bedroom and Blanch and Eunice in the other. They raised their four daughters in this house. The fourth room in back was the kitchen with a wood burning stove. The house did not have electricity or running water while Lloyd and Florine lived there. Helen described her father, because he stood around 5'9'', as being more like her grandmother's side of the family and for his appreciation of music. Her grandmother, Rebecca Ann (Embrey) Silvey was also expressive of her religious persuasions. She said the Silveys tended to be quiet but her father was someone people would come to for "counseling" because he listen to them. Although growing up in an area where the land had been in the Silvey family for four generation she stated she never heard any talk about the Baldknobbing type activites of the previous generation.

Lloyd and Florine supported themselves doing diversified family farming and read the newspaper to keep in touch with local news and world events. Their sources of revenue were from milk, hogs, beef, wool from sheep, chicken eggs, crops, and timber. Their few ongoing expenses were property taxes, basic foodstuffs not produced on the farm, and church contributions. There was no income taxes, insurance premiums, utilities, fica, minimal grocery bill, no payments on anything, and nearly no medical. Everything was either derived from the place or bartered with neighbors. In those times one could pay the doctor with a hog. Overall, cash money was scarce then. For Christmas each girl would hang a stocking from a chair since they did not have a fireplace for a mantel and place a shoe under the stocking. They were happy to get an orange and a piece of candy. Helen remembers one Christmas when she got a doll. For the Christmas meal there was usually ham and peaches from Arkansas that Florine had preserved.

Each school day all the daughters walked past their grandparents' home to attend the Ragsdale school where the teacher, Francis Wester, read to the class from the Bible. The children in the school came from about eight families, with many of them being first or second cousins. (See 1924 Ragsdale School.) While Lloyd used some old horses to work the farm and had a 1924 Model T Ford, he managed to purchase a new 1930 four door Chevy for Helen to drive using the little money that was available.  Helen drove her sisters and other kids that got a ride from her back and forth to Seymour to attend high school after completing eight grade at their one room Ragsdale grade school where Francis Webster taught. The car was the only piece of machinery on the farm with the exception of a gasoline engine powered washing machine. Helen remembers many times that her father got out in the mud to change flat tires after she drove home from school and did whatever maintenance was necessary to keep the car going. All four of their daughters finished high school while many kids living in rural areas, especially those without transportation, dropped out of school after eight grade to work the family farms.

Lloyd later bought more land because they needed some good bottom land for farming, making a total of 160 acres. Douglas Co. contained part of his land. During the depression, the lack of funds to pay the poll tax resulted in families loosing their farms. That was a major worry for them. Lloyd had to borrow once to pay the tax. Of course these places were purchased for little by banks, crooked lawyers, and other people of means after the local county sheriff paid his visit and removed the victims. Fortunately they were able to hang onto their farm which they later sold in 1950 or 1951 after they had already moved in 1946 to their two story home that had electricity on a 139-acre farm located one mile south of Seymour on BB Highway. In 1953 he removed the two story house and built a new one with indoor running water and a toilet in addition to having electricity where they lived until 1972. While living on this farm he also bought himself a used undersized tracker and stopped using horses for farming. He reworked the old horse implements in such ways to make them 'fit' the tractor. While he was very good at carpentry and animal husbandry, he was not comfortable working with mechanical things or any project involving metal. He bought few tools worth anything. His son-in-law, Dick Mitchiner, once bought him a large work vice while he was visiting the farm with his family on vacation just so the old mower blade Lloyd was working on could be securely held while he sharpened and replaced the teeth.

Thanks to Social Security, Lloyd and Florine were able to make plans to retire from farming. In preparation for retirement Lloyd built a new home in Seymour in 1971 near the former residence of his grandparents, John and Mary Jane Embrey and his brother, Charles. Lloyd and Florine moved into their Seymour home on December 2, 1972. They sold their farm on July 1, 1974. Their Seymour home is now the residence of their daughter, Eunice. Lloyd and Florine are both buried in the Webster Co. Seymour Masonic Cemetery. They had four daughters (See Pictures, Lloyd and Florine Silvey Family) and eight grandchildren (See Picture, Grandchildren). With two of their daughters living in California it was difficult getting both these daughters and their families back to the farm at the same time for full family reunions (See Picture, Full Clan).

                    E1.  HELEN ISABELL SILVEY (MITCHINER) (born April 11, 1916 and died June 23, 2015 at the age of 99 in Fullerton, CA). She attended the Ragsdale School with her sister, Blanche, (See 1924 Ragsdale School.) and graduated from Seymour High School. After high school she taught at the Ragsdale School and then went to Jefferson City to work for the state. Most weekends she was able to get a ride home to visit with her family. During the WW II she went first to work for the FBI in Washington D.C. where her sister Velma was working and then transferred to Los Angeles. She married in Los Angeles, CA on February 13, 1944, THOMAS RICHARD "DICK" MITCHINER (born January 23, 1909 at Southmayd, Texas and died March 29, 1984 at Downey, CA). (See Helen's biographical story going from farm life to California suburban living.) They had three children.

* Her obituary reads: Helen Isabell (Silvey) Mitchiner, a native of Missouri and the eldest daughter of Lloyd and Florine (Johns) Silvey, passed away on June 23, 2015 at the age of 99. She was predeceased by her three sisters; Blanche Blevins, Velma Boyce and Eunice Silvey. She grew up on the family farm in the southern section of Webster County Missouri and attended Ragsdale School, a one room schoolhouse. After graduation from high school in May, 1935 at Seymour she returned to the one room schoolhouse as the teacher. From her teaching position she was recruited to work for the state government in Jefferson City, Missouri. During World War II she left Missouri to take an administrative support position with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. She worked first for the FBI in Washington D. C. and then transferred to the FBI office in Los Angeles, California in 1943. In Los Angeles she met Thomas Richard (Dick) Mitchiner and they married on February 13, 1944. From Los Angeles they moved to Downey in 1953 after the birth of their youngest child. Helen was active in supporting her children in their school, recreational, and Downey First Baptist Church activities. She served for many years as the superintendent of the Kindergarten Sunday School Department. Visits with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her much joy. After the death of her husband in 1984 she continued to reside in the family home until moving to Morningside in Fullerton, California. She is survived by her three children, Carol (Doug) Waineo of Placentia, CA, Tom (Elisa) Mitchiner of Niceville, FL, John (Jacki) Mitchiner of Centennial, CO and ten grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren. Rev. Dennie Clemetson officiated at the graveside service on June 29, 2015 at the Rose Hills Memorial Park & Mortuaries in Whittier, California.

                    E2.  BLANCHE CAROLINE SILVEY (BLEVINS) (born March 25, 1918 in Seymour, MO and died July 2, 2007 in Christian Health Care in Republic, MO). She was saved at an early age and was a member of the Harmony Freewill Baptist Church of Seymour. She attended the Ragsdale School (See 1924 Ragsdale School.) and later graduated from Seymour High School in the Class of 1937. She married in Douglas Co. on November 3, 1937, ORVILLE FRANKLIN BLEVINS (born January 31, 1918 and died November 12, 1999). He also attended the Ragsdale School. They lived on a farm across from her parents near Seymour before moving to Springfield in 1966. They had three children. In 1982 she retired from St. John's Hospital in Springfield after 16 years of service and volunteered for over 20 years at Downtown Senior Center and later at the Southside Senior Center in Springfield.  

* Her obituary reads in part: "She enjoyed singing with the Brady Bunch at the area nursing homes, and she loved to sing the old-time gospel hymns and writing stories about her life experiences in the Ozarks. Several of her stories were featured in Over the Ozarks in the Springfield News-Leader. She was preceded in death by her husband, Orville; a grandson, Alan Blevins; her parents, Lloyd and Florine Silvey; and two brothers-in-law, Dick Mitchiner and L.D. Boyce. Blanche is survived by her daughter, Frances Jones and her husband, Shelby, of Rogersville, Mo.; two sons, Lowell Blevins, of Paris, Texas, and David Blevins and his wife, Badette, of Springfield, Mo.; five grandchildren, Chris Blevins and his wife, Robin, of Spring Lake, Mich., Dr. Kevin Jones and his wife, Shelly, of Greenwood, Ind., Cynthia Collins and her husband, Ray, of Strafford, Mo., Stefanie Blevins, of Kansas City, Kan., and Zachary Blevins, of Columbia, Mo.; three great-grandsons, Nathan Blevins, Henry Jones, and Nathan Collins; she is also survived by her sisters, Helen Mitchiner, of Fullerton, Calif., Velma Boyce, of Hastings, Nebr., and Eunice Silvey, of Seymour, Mo.; and a number of nieces and nephews, as well as many friends. We will miss our loved one singing, and the strength and love she showed during her life, but we know she is at peace, singing in Heaven. "

Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 6, 2007, in Holman-Howe Funeral Home in Seymour, with Elder Lloyd Steinshouer officiating. She is buried with her husband in the Webster Co. Seymour Masonic Cemetery.

Boyce on Sept. 11, 1942 in Washington, D.C.   She is survived by daughter Elda White and husband Dave of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; sister Helen Mitchiner of Fullerton, Calif.; daughter-in-law Michele Boyce of Nebraska City; granddaughters Elizabeth White of Arlington, Texas, Becky Ross of Jacksonville, Fla., and Amanda Boyce of Hastings; great granddaughters Sydney Ross and Aubrey Ross; many other relatives and friends. She was preceded by her husband on Nov. 22, 2003; son Rev. Lloyd Boyce; and sisters Eunice Silvey and Blanche Blevins. She lived in Hastings; Sylmar, Calif.; Ft. Lewis, Wash.; and Seymour, Mo. She moved to Nebraska City seven months ago. She worked as a salesperson prior to retirement. She was a member of First Baptist Church in San Fernando, Calif. Memorial services are at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19, at The Ambassador-Nebraska City. Interment of ashes will take place at a later date in the Glen Haven Memorial Park in Los Angeles."

She spent most of her life in the Seymour area. She was saved at the age of sixteen and was baptized and became a member of Harmony Free Will Baptist Church. Eunice graduated from Seymour High School in 1942. After graduation she worked for the F.B.I. in Washington D.C. She held various jobs including O’Reilly Hospital in Springfield, Seymour High School, Citizen’s Bank in Marshfield, and Union National Bank in Springfield. She also was a volunteer at the Seymour Senior Center and held the position of Treasurer of Webster County Council on Aging for 16 years. She also cared for her mom and dad in their later years. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister Blanche Blevins, and three brothers-in-law. Eunice is survived by two sisters, Helen Mitchiner, of Fullerton, California, and Velma Boyce, of Hastings, Nebraska; three nieces, Frances Jones, of Rogersville, Missouri, Carol Waineo, of Placentia, California, Elda White, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; five nephews, David Blevins, of Springfield, Missouri, Lowell Blevins, of Spring Lake, Michigan, Lloyd Boyce, of Farfield, Nebraska, Tom Mitchiner, of Greenville, North Carolina, and John Mitchiner, of Aurora, Colorado; great and great-great nieces and nephews, and cousins. Eunice was very gifted in music as well as crocheting, painting needlework, and doing jigsaw puzzles. Eunice was a loving sister, aunt, and a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate her life and accomplishments and she will be missed by all who knew and loved her."

Wright, constable of Lincoln township, and delivered to Sheriff Klineline, charged with disturbing the peace of a family. It is reported that while under the influence of whiskey, they forced their way into a neighbor's house and with drawn revolvers drove the men folk off the place and compelled the woman of the house to prepare them a meal of victuals. As soon as they sobered up and realized the scrape they were in, started to leave the country but were neatly overtaken by constable Wright, at Springfield and brought back." W.F. Wright was his brother-in-law that had been identified with Baldknobber activities in the Douglas Co. in 1886.

Listed with him are his wife, Mary J._______ (age 22) and their children: Sarah F. (age 4), Julia A. (age 2), and William (age 1 mo). His wife is buried in the Taney Co. Johnson Cemetery. His wife may be the JENNIE COY, daughter of Henry Coy and Mary e. Stokes, that married a Thomas Silvey in Taney Co. on January 8, 1896. She is under 18 since her mother had to give her consent for the marriage. Jennie was killed by Sam Ward. The paper read on August 15, 1901, "The dead body of Mrs. Thomas Silvey living near Kissee Mills, Taney Co. was found in the public road near that place Monday last with a bullet hole through her body." The paper read on August 22, 1901, "The body of Sam Ward, the party who was accused of the murder of Mrs. Jennie Silvey was found in the woods near the murder scene." Thomas may have remarried one or more times. When his sister, Lydia, died in 1939 he was living in Daisy, Oklahoma. The Greene Co. Certificate of Death 34200 for LENA B. SILVEY (born July 22, 1870 and died September 30, 1936 in Springfield) names Thomas M. Silvey as her husband. He may have other children by his subsequent marriages. No more information.

She passed away at her home one mile south of Highlandville, Mo., on Wednesday, Nov. 8, 1939, after an illness of several months. She was 64 years of age. She was the wife of Joe Swearengin, a long time resident and well known farmer of Christian county. Funeral services were held Thursday, Nov. 9, at the Klepper Funeral Chapel in Ozark with Rev. Ansley of Springfield officiating. Interment was made in the Swearengin cemetery in Douglas county under direction of B.C. Klepper. Survivors beside the husband include three sisters, Mrs. Fannie Stratton of Lebanon, and Mrs. Mahaley Blair of Protem, and one brother, Tom Silvey, of Daisy, Okla. and ......" At one time he lived in Afton Indian Territory. He married in Webster Co. (1) MAHALA 2-ELLISON (born September 22, 1843 on the Ellison Homestead, Beaver Creek, MO and died January 11, 1893 Douglas Co., MO) on August 7, 1862. She is buried in the Douglas Co. Ellison II Cemetery. Mahala was the daughter of James Ellison and Mahala Heady and a sister of Rebecca that married William C. Silvey, a brother of Jackson. Her father's marriage to Mahala Heady is in the Boone Co, IN records. Her father's previous marriage to Mary Morris is in the Kanawha Co. WV records. Also buried at the cemetery are Mary Silvey (born January 11, 1866 and died December 18, 1891) and Windel J. Silvey (born February 11, 1895 and died April 1, 1897). Jackson was the head of the Douglas Co. Baldknobbers. He was one of nine men related to him by blood or marrage that in 1886 were identified with Baldknobber activities in the Douglas Co. His nephew with the same name was referred to as Jack Jr.  He is listed as Jackson F. Silvey with his wife and three oldest daughters in the 1870 Douglas Co., Benton TWP Census. He is also listed as Jackson F. Silvey with his first wife and seven of their eight children in the 1880 Douglas Co., Benton TWP Census. In 1888 he filed for a Civil War Pension stating he served in the following units: Co. B, Webster Co., Mo. Headquarters; Co.A; Phelps State Infantry; Co. E., 8th Mo. Cav.; and Co. L, 8th Mo. Cav. In the 1890 Veterans Schedule, Clinton TWP, Douglas Co. he stated he served three years as a private, enlisting August 18, 1862 and being discharged August 1865. In 1892 he purchased 40 acres in the Douglas Co., Benton TWP near Ava and purchased more land in the same section from the Mt. Colony Baptist church on December 18, 1895, the same day he purchased 40 acres in adjoining Section 31, TWP 27, RNG 16 from Marris Williams . He married April 9, 1896 (2) CAROLINE SMITH from Putnam Co., West Virginia. Her maiden name was CAROLINE ALICE RIDDLE (born July 24, 1855 and died September, 1939, Douglas Co., Certificate of Death 32305). Her father, Jack Riddle, was born in Virginia. In the 1900 Census for Township 24, Cherokee Nation Territory, he is listed as Jackson Silva (age 58, born October 1841). He and Allice (age 45) had been married five years. Listed with them as his stepson and stepdaughter are her two children both born in Kansas, Baylico Smith (age 17 and Effie Smith (age 14) as well as Hazel Silva (age 3 months). Jackson (age 69) is listed with his second wife, Alice (age 54), and a daughter, Hazel (age 10), in the 1910 Douglas Co., Finley TWP Census. Jackson (age 79) is listed just with his wife, Caroline A. (age 65) in the 1920 Douglas Co., Findley TWP Census. Jackson and Alice are buried in the Douglas Co. Ava Cemetery. They had three children: Ethel, Wendall and Hobart. In the 1900 Douglas Co., Benton TWP Census he gives his age as 30 and a widower. He married in 1902 (2) LUCINDA MAE 1-PENNINGTON (born February 10, 1879 and died August 13, 1969). They had four children. He is listed with his family in the 1910 Douglas Co., Benton TWP Census and the 1920 Douglas Co., Benton TWP Census. B8.  MARION SILVEY SR (born June 30, 1846 in MO and died November 11, 1906 in Douglas Co., MO). At the age of fourteen at the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in Gov. Phelps' regiment and later served in the Eight Missouri Cavalry for three years and six months. He was slightly wounded in the battle of Pea Ridge. After he was honorably discharged in August 5, 1865 he married in 1867 CLARISSA A. HOLSTON (born March 20, 1848  in Virginia and died April 21, 1906 in Douglas Co.). Her father was William Holston and her mother was Martha Burnsides. Before the war her parents came to Douglas Co. from Virginia. Marion is listed in the 1870 Douglas Co., Benton TWP Census with his wife, Clarissa, and his six-month-old son, James W. Silvey.  In the 1880 Douglas Co., Benton TWP Census he is listed with his wife, Clarissa, and their youngest children, Martha (age 10) and Marion (Jr.) (age 7). On January 7, 1891 he filed for a Civil War Pension stating he served in the following units: Co. F., Phelps Mo. Infantry and Co. L., 8th Mo. Cav.  His brother, Jackson, also served in Co. L, 8th Mo. Cav. In the 1900 Greene Co., 1-WD Springfield Census he is listed again with his wife, Clarissa, and their children, Marion (age 25), Moses F. (age 18), Marietta (age 15), and a granddaughter, Lena G. (age 4). (Note: in the 1910 Webster Co., Hazelwood TWP Census there is listed in the household of Thomas Calvin and his wife, Martha, in addition to their children, three Silvey step children: Lena (age 14), Nona E. (age 12), and Mary (age 9). They all are possibly grandchildren of Marion, but it is not known through what child these children relate to Marion.). There is also a border, Jane Silvey, (age 26). On August 7, 1875 Marion received in the Douglas Co., Benton TWP a 80 acre homestead. His farm consisted of 220 acres about one mile west of Ava. In 1882  in the Douglas Co., Benton TWP Clarissa A. Silvey purchased 40 acres of public land. It is probably the senior Marion and not his son referred to in the Douglas County Harold, October 29, 1891, (Vol. V, No. 35). As the last child by Charles and his first wife, her world was probably turned upside down when her father married Cordelia before 1860. She is listed at the age of nine in the household of her father and his second wife, Cordelia, in the 1860 Webster Co., Finley TWP Census.  By 1870 she was the last child of Charles by his first marriage still at home. She is listed in the household of her father and his wife, Cordelia in the 1870 Douglas Co., Benton TWP Census. She left home by 1880 and is listed as the head of household in the 1880 Douglas Co., Benton TWP Census. Living with her is Martha age 6 and William age 3. From Douglas Co. she moved first to Taney Co. and then on to Ozark Co. by 1900. In the 1900 Ozarks Co., Marion TWP Census, at age 48, she is the head of household. Her marital status is listed as widow. Two of her sons, Riley (age 20) and Thomas (age 18), are living with her. She received in 1904 in Ozark Co. a 160 acre homestead. By the 1910 Ozarks Co., Marion TWP Census at age 59 she is living with her son, James Riley, and his family. Her marital status is listed as single. By the 1920 Ozarks Co., Marion TWP Census at age 69 she is still living with her son, James Riley, and his family. Her marital status is listed as a widow. He married THELMA JONES (born Abt. 1911 and died July 6, 2000 in Springfield, MO), daughter of Jackson Jones and Dosia Sullivan, on March 24, 1931. They built the Lonnie and Thelma Court at Theodosia, MO in the early 1950's and operated it for a number of years before moving to Springfiel, MO. They had a radio progrm called "Down Home Folks". He made a number of records of fiddle tunes, the last being "Fiddle Tunes Ozark Style". He also had another radio progrm called "Lonnie and Roy" that was broadcast from Pittsburg Kansas. Lonnie and Thelma loved to sing together. They are buried at the Ozark Co. Lutie Cemetery, Theodosia, MO.

                    E1.  JARRETT ROBERTSON (born September 3, 1940 and died February 23, 1993 in Germany). He married DANA PECKA in 1963. He was an Army Major General and died in an explosiion of an Army UH-60 Blackhawk Helicopter in Wiesbaden, Germany. He previously served two tours of duty in Vietnam as well as serving in Operation Desert Storm. He was buried at the Ozark Co. Lutie Cemetery, Theodosia, MO on March 5, 1993. 

    C2.  JOHN HENRY SILVEY (born August 16, 1876 near Ava, Douglas Co., MO and died September 15, 1961 in Malvern, IA). He is probably listed as William in the in the 1880 Douglas Co., Benton TWP Census. He married LAURA ALICE 2-MILLER (born April 6, 1881 in Prob. IL and died February 20, 1975 in Malvern, IA).             D1.  EARL ULYSSIS SILVEY (born February 3, 1906 and died April 23, 1995 in Ava, Douglas Co., MO). He married ATHA 2-SALLEE (born December 13, 1911 and died april 10, 1997), daughter of Jacob Sallee and Addie Gladden. He is listed in the Douglas Co., MO SSDI and his wife is listed in the Wright Co., MO SSDI. They are buried in the Ozark Co. Longrun Cemetery.

            D2.  WILLIAM MERL SILVEY (born September 29, 1908 and died January 1, 1998). He married DORTHY MAY BREWER (born May 20, 1914 and died March 20, 1998) on October 15, 1932.  They are buried in the Ozark Co. Longrun Cemetery. A seventh child, Orin, apparently died before the census.

            D3.  BULLAH MARIE SILVEY (PELLHAM) (born October 22, 1911 at Longrun, MO and died February 9, 1980). She married GEORGE THEODORE "TED" PELLHAM (born September 23, 1905 in Shiloh near Hammond, Ozark co., MO and died March 9, 1981 in Springfield, MO), son of John Pellham and Gaberilla Green on October 12, 1932 in Longrun, Ozark Co., MO.

            D4.  OTIS STERLING "DOC" SILVEY (born May 31, 1914 and died March 31, 2001). He married RAC 2-TABOR (born October 7, 1916 and died January 9, 1988). Their children are: Doyle and Artella. He and his wife are buried in the Spokane Cemetery, Christian Co.. His obituary contributed by Randall Phillips.

"Otis Sterling "Doc" Silvey, 86, Spokane, passed away Saturday, March 31, 2001 in Ozark Riverview Manor. He was born May 31, 1914 in Long Run, Mo., the son of James Riley "JR" Silvey and Alta B. "Allie" (Stockton) Silvey. On Jan. 20, 1935, he and Rae Tabor were married. She preceded him in death on Jan. 9, 1988. Three brothers, a sister, and a grandson, Randy Silvey, also preceded him in death. Mr. Silvey was a farmer throughout his life. He attended Old 65 Full Gospel Church. Survivors include: two children, Artilla Stone and her husband Matt, Bruner and Doyle Silvey and his wife, Burnell, Spokane; three grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandchild; a brother, Jess Silvey and a sister, Vada Smith, both of Long Run. A graveside funeral was April 2 in Spokane Cemetery with Rev. Joe Dan Edwards officiating."

B10.  MARTHA F. SILVEY (born 1861 and died ?). Her mother was Cordelia who was the second wife of Charles Silvey. She is last found, at age nineteen, living in her parents home in the 1880 Douglas Co., Finley TWP Census. In A Reminiscent History of the Ozark Region there is no mention of a second wife of Charles. There is also no mention of Martha as a child Charles. The book does mention a child of Charles named "Dode" that died young. No more information.

B11.  SAMUEL SILVEY (born 1863 and died ?). His mother was Cordelia the second wife of Charles Silvey, by the 1870 Douglas Co., Finley TWP Census where Samuel (age 7) is first found. By the 1880 Greene Co., Tayor TWP Census Samuel (age 16) was living in the household of his half-brother, W. Morrison. In A Reminiscent History of the Ozark Region Samuel is named as a child of Charles. Samuel's wife was MARY E. _____. On September 7, 1900 in Douglas Co., Samuel and Mary E. Silvey received a 40 acre homestead. There is a Samuel Silvey (born June 11, 1869 and died November 1, 1895) buried in the Douglas Co. Burdett Cemetery.  No more information.

Roberts was elected director for a three year term, and Berry Silvey director for the unexpired term of Elias Cobb who removen for the district. A vote was taken for a six months school, the tax for the coming year will be 40 cts. on the $100 valuation."  

April 10, 1890 (Vol.IV, No.6) "Berry Silvey has purchased the J.D. Reynolds place in this city and expects shortly to move his family there."

January 1, 1891 (Vol.IV, No.44) "On Tuesday Dec. 30, William Morrison, age 24 years, (born 1867) while assisting his brother in feeding some cattle at the Berry Silvey place, suddenly fell dead. He appeared to be in perfect health up to the time of his death. It is supposed that the cause of his sudden death was heart disease." (Perhaps this William A. Morrison is the son of Josephine who was a step daughter of Charles Silvey by his second marriage to Cordelia Morrison.
